Vendor Q&A + Styled Shoot BTS

Team TD had a super busy weekend this weekend but got to work with so many of our vendor friends! On Sunday, we got to help our extremely talented friend Laura with a photography workshop. I got to teach a little styling lesson to the attendees and we put on a styled shoot for them to get some content! While we were there, we interviewed some of our vendor friends that helped make the day run so well. Keep reading to see why we all love styled shoots + to learn more about what goes on during one. We also have some BTS pictures for you!

How did your decision to shoot this styled shoot in film contribute to the creative direction of today?

Capturing my work in film leads to me creating more intuitive and intentional imagery. Film has a distinct quality that is hard to replicate in digital, and I love how the texture, light, and grain of film lends to the look and feel of the final photography product! In order to make sure I captured the day well, light played a large roll in producing the imagery, as well as paying strict attention to details, backgrounds, and variety in posing and composition.

From a photographer’s perspective, what is something that goes on BTS of styled shoots that many people don’t realize?

I think a lot of people underestimate the frontend/behind the scenes planning of what happens during a styled shoot. There are so many vignettes to navigate, and it takes time to plan out a story and determine how we, as the photographer, want to showcase the story in front of us. Anyone can make pretty pictures, but true and interesting work comes from telling a story and planning an artistic way of expressing each detail! I love using the elements of the design to lead into who our couple is, what they love, and how they've chosen the details of the day!

Florals- Ginger Rose

Why do you love the opportunity to do styled shoots?

I love getting to work on styled shoots because it is such a great opportunity to collaborate with other creative vendors and forecast new trends and ideas that we'd like to see happening in weddings for the future.  These shoots provide wedding vendors the chance to work with new color palettes and to create up-and-coming concepts that brides often haven't seen before, so it gives everyone a chance to create new "Pinterest Trends" and design concepts that we hope our clients will incorporate into their future wedding.

How is the creative direction/ planning process for styled shoots different from that of weddings?

The planning process for a styled shoot is different from a real wedding in the sense that it really allows wedding vendors to think outside of the box and create what they wish they were seeing more of in the wedding industry.  It is also always so much fun to collaborate with other vendors during the initial creative planning process, which I feel happens less with a real wedding because you don't always get to work with your dream "friendors" in the industry since your client usually chooses most of their other vendors prior to when they start even thinking about florals.  One of the biggest reasons why I love working on a styled shoot is because you are able to align with other vendors from start to finish with whom you want to work with more often because they have a similar aesthetic to your brand and design process!

Cake - Cake Envy

What cake decoration trends have you been seeing a lot of lately?

Texture on cakes has been so big right now! When adding texture on cakes, I always prefer to use buttercream as opposed to fondant. Buttercream is so much more versatile for adding texture to cakes and is more artistic while fondant portrays much more realistic details.

What is one flavor of cake that is always a hit with couples and guests?

Most bakeries have you pick your top three flavors off a list for your tasting. However, I feel like couples tend to stick to familiar flavors and don’t branch out as much. That is why I have couples taste my top seven flavors so they can taste flavors they otherwise may not have tried. The most popular though lately has definitely been champaign. It is always a hit with the couple and their guests!
